...because..."Marghrib, smaa zarga" - "Morocco is where the sky is blue"
...and so close, people do not realise!
Often called "Europe's gateway to Africa", Morocco is situated on the north west coast of the continent, and it is separated from the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain by only 9 miles of water at the Straits of Gibraltar. It is a hop on a ferry!
And there is no time difference between Morocco and the UK!
A country of contrasts
Morocco has over 2000 miles of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the green lush northern region, the rugged Atlas mountains, straddling the centre of the country from south west to north east, and the vast expanse of the Sahara itself to the south east.
The climate is largely determined by the diverse geography of Morocco. The weather in the northern coastal regions is good all year round, very similar to the Costa del Sol, with over 300 days of sunshine and a little rain, mainly in winter.
Morocco's contrast continues with its sights and sounds. The narrow streets of the medinas, compared to the wide sandy beaches and modern golf courses; the medieval splendour of Marrakech or Fez, snow and skiing in the Atlas mountains; the souks and medina of Tangier; enjoy sport and leisure: golf, windsurfing, horse-riding, balloon trips, visit palaces or the special mosques:or just soak up the sun!
A growing economy and a modernising Government
Morocco is an economically healthy country. Annual growth is a most satisfactory 6.8% and its major industries are mining, textiles, tourism and leather goods.
Morocco's government is by constitutional monarchy and since HRH King Mohammed VI came to the throne in 1999, Morocco has progressed on a modernising agenda.
One of the key economic sectors that Morocco wishes to grow is tourism. Tourism has grown by more than 18% over the last year, giving it the fourth largest number of foreign visitors, around 2million, in the whole of Africa, after South Africa, Tunisia and Egypt. The Government target is 10 million tourists annually by 2010.
This is a major undertaking and the government has guaranteed to provide the necessary infrastructure to connect coastal resorts with the rest of the country and Europe by constructing 1000 Km of new roads, developing new regional airports, and increasing internal and international flights.
Morocco welcomes foreign investment and they are promoting the "residential tourism" concept that has characterised the property markets of Spain, France, and Portugal. Developers are already building low density holiday complexes and this will have a big effect on property prices in key tourist areas.
Low Property Prices & Low Cost of Living
The price of property has increased by around 300% over the last five years thanks to the political stability and economic policy of the Government, but still property prices are currently only about half what you would pay in Spain or popular areas of France.
The property structure is similar to the UK, with both freehold and leasehold ownership and buying is supervised by appointed notaries.
And that's not all - the cost of living in Morocco is around half of that of the UK.
Growing transport links
There are 4 air gateway cities into Morocco: Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakech and Tangier with regular flights. Also Tangier has up to 10 ferry crossings per day in summer to and from Southern Spain, so you can fly cheap to Malaga or Gibraltar and take the ferry across from Algeciras or Tarifa.
